From the Mountains to Matamoros, Big Heart Orphanage and Children's Home has spent the spring and summer doing what it does best — loving kids, families, and their whole community.
Spring and summer have brought a steady flow of volunteers to Big Heart Ministries — churches, families, and mission groups who arrived ready to work and stayed to connect. At Reynosa and Matamoros, visiting teams spent time doing crafts, playing games, and simply being present with the kids. What started as a first-time visit for several groups turned into something that felt a lot more permanent — the kind of connection that brings people back.
On the construction side, volunteers have been busy. A school building got painted inside and out. A carport and carpentry shop were finished. New fencing went up. A warehouse got wired for electricity and fitted with a garage door. Desks and chairs were hauled across the border for the school. New school property was cleared and readied for what comes next.
Jiu-Jitsu sessions continued to be one of the most consistent and meaningful threads running through the season — with high school students not just training, but stepping up to share their faith at a local rehabilitation center. Every group that has passed through Big Heart's gates this season has left something lasting behind.
The Big Heart family has been growing in every direction across all three locations — Reynosa, Matamoros, and Casa Hogar de la Montaña in Ramos Arizpe. New staff members have joined the team, including a social worker in Reynosa supporting the ministry's legal work on behalf of the children. A new child was welcomed into the Ramos Arizpe family. And the entrance walls at that location received a beautiful new mural, giving the whole place a refreshing new look.
Celebrations have been woven throughout the season. Mother's Day took the moms of Reynosa and Matamoros to the beach — hot dogs, hamburgers, sand, and ocean. Teacher's Day turned into a school-wide competition that ended with handwritten notes of appreciation from every student. Family Day at Matamoros brought the community together for games, singing, prayer, and a shared meal.
When the last day of school finally arrived at Matamoros, the children surprised their teacher with a birthday party, then settled in to watch a movie together. Small moments. Big love. That's Big Heart.
The reach of Big Heart Ministries has always extended beyond its own gates — and this season was no different.
In Ramos Arizpe, children performed a school play built around a message worth carrying into the world: that with discipline, dedication, and faith, no dream is out of reach. Staff and teachers from a local partner school took that same message into the nearby Ejido community, spending time with children who live just beyond the orphanage walls.
Children's Day in Reynosa and the Mountains brought an outpouring from the broader community — local companies donating gifts, food, sweets, and games for the kids. Mothers from the surrounding colonia gathered for a shared breakfast celebration, welcomed in as part of the family.
Season after season, Big Heart Ministries remains committed to the belief that lasting change begins by caring for children and the communities that help them thrive. Every new volunteer, every answered prayer, and every open door is another step toward helping a child discover what it means to be loved—and to embrace a future filled with hope.
